Reinvention Is a Leadership Skill — Just Ask Four Roses Bourbon

The things you learn while visiting the trail! During Prohibition, over 200 distilleries shut their doors. The bourbon industry collapsed under new laws and tighter restrictions.

But not all of them vanished.

Four Roses, founded in the 1800s, survived not by doubling down but by pivoting.

They earned a license to produce “medicinal whiskey” and literally printed dosage instructions on the bottle. Bourbon as medicine. A reinvention that saved the brand.

Today, Four Roses ranks in the top 10 bourbons in the world.

They didn't abandon their identity; they reframed it.

In coaching leaders and sales teams, I see this lesson over and over:

✅ The best don't resist change, they reposition.

✅ They spot legal, cultural, or market “loopholes" and move quickly.

✅ They realize reinvention isn't a betrayal, it’s the only way to last.

If your market is shifting, your team is struggling, or your value proposition isn't landing like it used to, maybe it's time to look at how Four Roses made it through the dry years.

Ask yourself, how are you positioning your product, brand, hiring, teams, or leadership during today's market shifts?
