Coachable is a Superpower

Being coachable might just be your most underrated superpower.
Not charisma. Not talent. Not even experience. Coachability.
Back in my early 20s, I coached Club volleyball for teenage girls. I chose to lead the #2 team. Why? Because I wanted the girls who still believed they had more to learn. The ones who showed up hungry, not entitled. Even at 13, some thought they had it all figured out.
Here's the lesson that's stuck with me for 30 years:
You can teach a skill. You can’t teach coachability.
It’s easy to say “I want feedback.”
It’s harder to hear it without flinching.
And it’s even harder to do something about it consistently.
As a consultant, my job is to offer guidance and perspective. Sometimes, it clicks. Other times? It bounces right off. Because here's the truth:
People crave change until it demands something of them.
But the top performers? The leaders who rise fast, adapt well, and stand out?
They all share one trait: they stay coachable.
Coachability isn’t weakness or passivity. It's strength in motion. It means you:
✅ Stay open, even when it challenges your current thinking
✅ Seek input before things go sideways
✅ Discern advice with wisdom, not ego
✅ Treat feedback as fuel, not fire
In sales, coaching isn't just for rookies; it's the long game.
The moment we stop learning, we start losing ground.
And as a leader? The best gift you can give your team is your example. Show them that growth isn't just accepted, it's expected.
Because the people who keep climbing are the ones who keep learning.
